WINTER PRUNING

Monday March 2nd we had 12 inches of snow. It was a beautiful day to watch flocks of birds at the feeders and snowshoe off into the woods. Prior to this day of blanketing white, a 50 degree day allowed me to pollard the Rose of Sharon and David prune and thin out the Kousa dogwood. I even went around and cut the ornamental grasses down half way. Later in the month before the snows totally melt, I will torch what's left. Just have to be careful not to burn where shrubs are close by as the hot instant flames can do damage. Late February and March is a good time to prune. Just make sure you don't prune shrubs that bloom in spring.
